(Updated 9.21.2023)
I do editing a little differently than most editors, as I choose to work specifically with newer authors (for the most part), ones that are interested in learning how to take their writing to the next level. (This does not mean that I turn away authors who are not newer. I address that below.)
I offer one editing package for one price. This editing package begins with the client filling out a MANUSCRIPT QUESTIONNAIRE. Afterwards, I do provide an optional BOOK CONSULTATION (this can be via phone or email) where we can discuss what you are looking for and needing from your editor. Once the contract is signed and the payment has been received, I begin the first stage of the edit – the DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT. I read your manuscript three times during this stage: the first as an avid reader, so that I can form an idea of what the book is all about and the writing style, and this allows me to give you my personal opinion on the story as a whole; the second and third as an editor. Once those reads are complete, I will send you my notes and we can schedule an EDIT CONSULTATION. The manuscript is now in your hands, to rework based on my notes and our conversation. Once this is completed, I begin the second stage of the edit – the COPY EDIT. This is a more detailed look at the book itself, where the “red pen” really comes out. Again, the book is back on your desk, ready for you to accept (or not) the changes I have suggested (based on markups with comments and reasons). Once you are done with your corrections, I then go through for stage three – PROOFREADING. (This is the only stage where I make actual changes to your manuscript, BUT they are all done with Tracking in Word, so you will be the final say in every change.)
- Manuscript Questionnaire
- (optional) Book Consultation
- Contract + Payment
- Stage 1: Developmental Editing
- Edit Consultation
- Stage 2: Copy Editing
- Stage 3: Proofreading
I have had requests in the past from authors who are looking for certain parts of the package, them feeling (based on their career length) that the entire package is not beneficial to them, and I have chosen (and not chosen) to take some of those clients on. In that situation, I will charge you for the MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE (this is two read-throughs of the manuscript, and my thoughts and opinions on the book in document form, usually 5-10 pages). You can also choose to do an EDIT CONSULTATION with me after you receive my notes and have had time to sit down and look at them. From there, we can discuss our next steps, if any.
I want to point out here that individual parts of the package may be more costly than the package itself, as I have given a discount on the package price.
I do offer PROOFREADING and BETA READ services, so if you are looking for someone who will do either of those, please contact me and we can talk about your project. (Yes, I do charge for BETA READS. The reason I do this is that I am highly educated and have a lot of experience in this industry, having done this since 2012 for this company, and also having worked for two of the big five publishing companies. My rates are very low, and I do put a lot into each BETA READ that I do.)
As I said above, I do prefer to work with newer authors, as they are interested in learning as they progress through the edit, but am more than willing to speak to any author looking for an editor for their project. Let’s discuss what it is that you need from me.
